How To Spend 24 Hours In Vancouver

February 25, 2016

I am lucky enough to live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world at the moment. Last week I woke up to a message from a friend who was coming to Vancouver for a short visit. And when I say short, I mean 24 hours. Only one full day to explore this beautiful city. When she asked what she could do in one day, I was stumped. I had no idea how to spend just one day exploring this city. There is so much to see and do here, it would be impossible to do it all in one day. It only meant one thing! Time to play the tourist! It’s always fun to play tourist in the city you live in. When I was playing the part of tourist in transit, I came up with a list of the must sees you should do if you ever have a short layover in Vancouver, Canada.

Stanley Park
There is over 400 hectares to explore in this culture-rich park and you could easily spend all day wandering around, taking in some of the awesome views it has to offer along the famous Seawall. If you are here on a tight schedule, I would recommend hiring a bike and cycling around. That way, you will get to see most of what Stanley Park has to offer. Don’t forget to check out the tall totem polls, it makes for a great historical photo.

Granville Island
This little island is one of Vancouver’s busiest attractions and once you get there you will see why. The bustling little island is full of boutique shops, galleries and a public market open 7 days a week, 9am – 7pm. Make sure you go to on an empty stomach as there are some delectable treats in the stalls throughout the market. Once you have grabbed some food, head outside and watch some of the buskers entertain the crowd.

Suspension Bridge
There are two suspension bridges you can go and check out while you are in Vancouver. The Lyn Valley Suspension Bridge or the Capilano Suspension Bridge. Capilano Suspension Bridge is the bigger and better version. Although, its does set you back $37.95 for a walk around, taking about 2.5 hours, including looking through the shops. If your on a budget Lyn Valley is the better choice, as it is free and you still get to see the same lush greenery, trails and forrest as Capilano offers.

Explore Downtown
If you don’t feel like heading out and travelling to see any of the above, it’s ok to stay downtown. You won’t find yourself bored wishing you didn’t have this layover in Vancouver. Head to historical Gas Town, walk along the waterfront to watch the sea planes take off and get your shop on along Robson Street. Believe it or not Vancouver is also known to have some of the worlds best sushi. My favourite sushi eatery whenever I am downtown, is a small hole in the wall called Sushi Home along Dunsmuir Street. It is cheap and it will be some of the best sushi you will ever have the pleasure to eat.
