Even before my shuttle bus dropped me at the boat docks, I knew that I would love Lake Atitlan. Winding through the volcano on the small dirt roads down towards the docks was breath taking. One of the most beautiful lakes you are certainly ever to see, is nestled between towering volcanoes, more than a dozen villages and is home to the very traditional Mayan people. Most guide books will have you believe that a few days is enough around Lake Atitlan. I was there for 8 nights and while I felt I got to see a lot of what it had to offer, I also felt that I barely scratched the surface.
Most of my time was honestly taken up by staring at its beauty. I had my camera in my hand the whole time ready to snap up the scenery. Lake Atitlan made it to my Top 5 destinations around the world and I hope these pics will inspire you to add this destination to your bucket list!
One of the best parts of my visit to Lake Atitlan was how cultural it still is. Each village around the lake is individually traditional in its own way, even down to the way the Mayans dress.
All around the lake there was incredible art work painted on the walls of the towns. I saw some of the best street art I have ever seen in the world at Lake Atitlan.
The colours of the sunrise here are perfect! I know, I know you’re on holidays! But, the early wake up call to catch this sunrise is totally worth it!
